This flat, fast, and remarkably straight 5.0km out-and-back route is a local favorite for runners looking to find their rhythm. Starting in Sale and heading toward Timperley, the Bridgewater Canal towpath offers a 100% paved surface with zero elevation gain, making it the perfect setting for a personal best hunt or a recovery jog. The route is largely sheltered by overhanging trees, providing a cool canopy in the summer and protection from the elements during the winter. As you cruise along the water, you'll be joined by a steady flow of local club runners and cyclists, all enjoying the smooth, uninterrupted path away from the traffic of Washway Road.
Steeped in industrial heritage, the Bridgewater Canal is often cited as England’s first "true" canal, commissioned by the Duke of Bridgewater to transport coal from his mines in Worsley. Running this stretch offers a glimpse into that history, as you pass colorful narrowboats moored along the banks and cross under historic stone bridges that feel miles away from the Manchester city center. The Sale stretch of the canal has undergone significant regeneration, and once you’ve finished your 5k, the nearby Sale Water Park or the bars at Sale Moor provide excellent spots to refuel with the local running community.
