This 8.2km loop offers a fantastic introduction to the rugged beauty of the South Pennines, starting from the convenient parking area at Watergrove Reservoir. As a Category SL fell run, you can expect a challenging 196m of vertical gain with absolutely no pavement underfoot. The route begins with a gentle warm-up alongside the water before transitioning into a steady, lung-busting climb on grassy trails up to the twin summits of Crook Hill. From the top, runners are rewarded with panoramic views across the Rochdale skyline and the surrounding moors, followed by a fast, technical descent that winds past the towering turbines of the wind farm before a high-speed finish back toward the reservoir banks.
Watergrove Reservoir is steeped in local Pennine history; the valley once housed the village of Watergrove, which was submerged in the 1930s to create the reservoir you see today. While running these trails, you are traversing land that has transitioned from industrial grit to a haven for local wildlife and outdoor enthusiasts. The gritstone outcrops of Crook Hill itself serve as a dramatic focal point for the area, standing as ancient sentinels over the West Pennine Moors. Runners should keep an eye out for diverse birdlife and fluctuating weather conditions, as the exposed nature of the moorland means the elements can shift quickly, adding a true "fell running" feel to this scenic Rochdale adventure.
