This 9.5km loop offers a quintessential Northern trail running experience, blending steady climbs with sweeping descents through the rugged hills of Rochdale. The route is defined by an honest 191m gain, with the majority of the elevation packed into the first 4km along Tunshill Lane—a perfect test for your climbing legs. Once you crest the initial ridge, you are rewarded with a scenic descent toward the serene Piethorne and Ogden Reservoirs. The terrain is wonderfully varied, transitioning from paved lanes (roughly 45% of the course) to technical grassy paths and well-packed surfaced trails, making it an ideal choice for runners looking to transition from road to light fell running.
Steeped in industrial heritage, the Piethorne Valley was once a hive of activity, with its reservoirs constructed in the mid-19th century to quench the thirst of a rapidly growing Lancashire. As you navigate the trails around the water's edge, you’ll be running through South Pennine landscape that inspired local writers and provided a backdrop to the region's textile history. The area is now a haven for local birdlife and provides some of the most dramatic views in Greater Manchester, particularly as you climb away from Ogden Reservoir and look back across the moorland towards the Pennine watershed.
