Conquer Tandle Hill on this rewarding 5.5km loop that perfectly balances lush woodland trails with steady uphill challenges. Starting with a spirited climb through the mature beech trees to the park's summit, runners are treated to a mixed-terrain experience featuring roughly 60% paved surfaces and 70 meters of total ascent. After conquering the initial hill, the route transitions into a scenic descent out of the park and onto quiet lanes that lead to the tranquil banks of the River Irk. The return leg features a gentle riverside incline and a stretch skirting the edge of Royton, providing a refreshing mix of natural forest air and local road segments that keep your pace varied and your heart rate climbed.
This route carries you through Tandle Hill Country Park, the oldest country park in Oldham and a former private estate of the local "Radcliffe" family during the 19th century. Historically significant as a gathering place for political reformers in the early 1800s, the park now serves as a peaceful 48-hectare sanctuary between Royton and Middleton. Reaching the monument at the top of the hill offers runners one of the best perspectives in Greater Manchester; on a clear day, your efforts are rewarded with panoramic views stretching across the Manchester plain and as far as the Welsh mountains. It is a quintessential Pennine-fringe run that captures the industrial heritage and natural regeneration of the Oldham landscape.
