This 7.3km loop offers a quintessential Peak District running experience, weaving around the scenic trio of Dovestone, Yeoman Hey, and Greenfield reservoirs. Rated as a moderate run with 75m of ascent, the route begins with a steady climb from the main car park to reach the upper reservoir levels. While the initial paths are well-surfaced and ideal for finding your rhythm, the return leg past the upper reaches transitions into grassy trails that provide a true cross-country feel. Runners should be prepared for softer, "heavy" ground underfoot during the winter months or after local rainfall, making trail shoes a wise choice even on this relatively accessible course.
Located on the edge of Oldham and the Greater Manchester boundary, Dovestone Reservoir serves as a dramatic gateway to the Dark Peak. Historically part of a major water catchment system for the industrial North, the area is now a protected RSPB nature reserve, famed for its nesting peregrine falcons and wild moorland vistas. Local runners often share the paths with resident sheep and the occasional red deer, while the towering "Chew Pie" crags provide a rugged backdrop that makes this 7.3km circuit feel far more remote than its proximity to the city suggests. It is a favorite spot for local clubs thanks to the perfect blend of flat lakeside stretches and punchy gritstone inclines.
