This 5.8km loop offers a fantastic blend of paved surfaces and gentle canal-side running, making it one of Oldham’s most rewarding short routes. Starting at Chadderton Hall Park, you’ll tackle a steady ascent of 45m as you head toward Hough Lane. While the route is classified as hilly, the elevation gain is concentrated in the first half, rewarded by sweeping views of the surrounding valley. The second half of the run transitions into a flat, rhythm-heavy stretch along the Rochdale Canal, allowing you to open up your stride and enjoy the peaceful waterfront as you head back towards the finish. It’s an ideal distance for a mid-week tempo run or a scenic weekend jog.
Chadderton Heights is often described by locals as a "hidden gem" of the Greater Manchester fringe, providing a rural feel just minutes from the urban center of Oldham. The route begins in the historic Chadderton Hall Park, which was once the site of a magnificent manor house dating back to the 13th century. As you run along the Rochdale Canal, you are traversing a vital piece of the Industrial Revolution’s heritage; this waterway was once the primary artery for the local textile mills that defined the region. Today, the area has been reclaimed by nature, offering runners a quiet escape filled with local wildlife and a glimpse into the northern soul of Lancashire’s industrial past.
