Discover a tranquil escape from the urban hustle with this 5.2km loop through Clayton Vale and Philips Park. This predominantly paved route is remarkably flat, featuring only 11 meters of ascent, making it an ideal choice for Manchester runners looking for a fast tempo session or a relaxing recovery jog. Starting from Ten Acres Lane, you’ll navigate a mix of well-maintained paths that wind through dense woodland and open meadows. The terrain is roughly 80% paved, offering reliable footing even when the North West weather turns damp, while the remaining sections provide a soft, natural feel underfoot as you shadow the Medlock Valley.
Clayton Vale is often described as the "Green Heart of Manchester," but it wasn't always this serene. Once a site of heavy industry and later a landfill, it underwent a massive environmental transformation in the 1980s to become the lush Nature Reserve you see today. Adjacent to the route lies Philips Park, one of the world’s first municipal parks opened in 1846, designed specifically to provide fresh air to the local workforce during the Industrial Revolution. As you run past the River Medlock, keep an eye out for kingfishers and herons; it’s hard to believe you’re just a few miles from the Etihad Stadium and the city center.
