This 8.1km loop offers a quintessential Northern trail running experience, blending steady climbs with sweeping panoramic views of Greater Manchester and the West Pennine Moors. Starting from the edge of Bury, you’ll tackle most of the 121m ascent in the first half of the run, transitioning from localized paved sections to rugged stony trails and soft, grassy paths. The climb up toward Pilgrim’s Cross is the "crux" of the route, demanding strong lung capacity and steady footing, but the reward is a fast, flowing descent across Holcombe Moor that allows you to open up your stride and enjoy the open landscape.
Holcombe Moor is steeped in local heritage and is perhaps most famous for the Peel Monument which stands guard over the valley, though this specific route takes you deeper into the moorland toward the historic site of Pilgrim’s Cross. Evidence of a stone cross has existed here since AD 1176, marking an ancient route between Manchester and Whalley Abbey. As you navigate the moor, you are running through a landscape that has served as everything from medieval grazing land to a vital military training ground, providing a sense of isolation and wilderness just a short distance from the industrial heart of Lancashire.
