This 7.5km loop offers an incredibly flat and fast escape through one of South West London’s hidden river corridors. Starting at Craneford Way, the route follows an anticlockwise direction along the River Crane Walk, transitioning between well-maintained paved paths and brief sections of natural trail. With only 11 meters of elevation gain, it is perfectly suited for tempo runs or those looking to enjoy a rhythmic, uninterrupted stride. Runners can expect a lush, green canopy that provides excellent shelter, passing through the tranquil Kneller Gardens before looping back toward the start. The 95% paved surface makes it a reliable choice for year-round training, regardless of the weather.
Steeped in industrial heritage, Crane Park was once the site of the Hounslow Gunpowder Mills, which operated from the 16th to the 20th century. As you run, keep an eye out for the iconic Shot Tower—a Grade II listed structure built in 1828 to manufacture lead shot—which now serves as a visitor center within the nature reserve. The area is a haven for local wildlife; it is not uncommon to spot kingfishers darting over the water or water voles along the banks. This run perfectly blends Twickenham's suburban charm with a rugged sense of history, offering a peaceful alternative to the more crowded paths of nearby Richmond Park.
