This 21.3km loop offers an immersive half marathon experience through two of London's most iconic green spaces, blending 15km of paved surfaces with spirited segments of bare earth and gravel. Starting from Sheen Gate, you'll tackle an undulating profile with a total ascent of 110m, making it a "clumpy" but manageable challenge for those looking to build endurance. Runners can expect a brilliant mix of terrain as they navigate the expansive deer-filled meadows of Richmond Park before transitioning via an untimed road crossing into the more rugged, wooded enclaves of Wimbledon Common. The final stretch across the Pen Ponds causeway provides a quintessential flat-water view that serves as the perfect psychological boost for the closing kilometers.
Richmond Park and Wimbledon Common are steeped in royal history and literary charm, serving as the lungs of Southwest London for centuries. Richmond Park, originally a 17th-century hunting ground created by Charles I, is now a National Nature Reserve where red and fallow deer still roam freely, offering a wilder feel than typical city parks. Wimbledon Common adds a different flavor to the run, famous for its historic Windmill and as the inspiration for the classic Wombles stories. Running here provides a unique sense of scale; it’s one of the few places in the capital where you can lose sight of the skyline and feel completely absorbed by the ancient woodlands and lowland heath that characterize this historic landscape.
