This 3.8km loop through Claybury Park offers a refreshing escape into one of East London’s best-kept secrets. Despite its modest distance, the route packs a punch with a mix of terrains, featuring roughly 65% paved tarmac paths and the remainder consisting of winding grassy trails that can get pleasantly soft underfoot. With a total ascent of 32m, you’ll encounter some rolling "hilly" sections that are perfect for building leg strength without being overwhelming. It’s a versatile course that allows for speed on the flats and more technical footwork through the wooded areas, making it an ideal spot for a quick morning blast or a light trail session.
Located near Woodford Bridge, Claybury Park is steeped in history, originally serving as the grounds for the Claybury Asylum in the late 19th century. Today, the asylum’s historic buildings have been repurposed, but the surrounding parkland has been beautifully preserved as an ancient woodland and wildflower meadow. Runners will appreciate the "Reptonian" design influence across the landscape, which provides a sense of grandeur and seclusion. As you traverse the paths, look out for the park's diverse wildlife and the majestic oaks that have stood for centuries, giving this urban green space a truly timeless, rural feel right within the M25.
