This 6.0km loop offers a refreshing escape through East London’s green belt, weaving through the diverse landscapes of Ingrebourne Hill and Hornchurch Country Park. With a mix of paved paths and well-maintained trails, the terrain is varied but remarkably flat, making it an ideal choice for a steady tempo run or a recovery session. Runners will enjoy a blend of open grasslands, quiet woodlands, and views over the Ingrebourne Valley. The segment along the Ingrebourne Way provides a smooth, reliable surface, while the loop around the bike park offers a slightly more rugged feel without the daunting vertical gain often found in hillier regions.
Steeped in aviation history, this area was once the site of RAF Hornchurch, an essential fighter station during both World Wars. As you run past the marshes and regenerated hills, you are traversing grounds where Spitfires once scrambled to defend London’s skies. Today, the site has been transformed into an award-winning nature reserve, managed by Essex Wildlife Trust and Forestry England. Local runners often spot kestrels and lapwings over the reedbeds, which are some of the largest in London. It is a brilliant example of urban rewilding, where the echoes of military history have given way to one of the most biodiverse running spots in Havering.
