This 5.2km loop through Scadbury Park offers a refreshing escape into London's "green chain," making it a favorite for trail runners seeking variety without leaving the city. The course is entirely unpaved, featuring undulating forest paths that provide a moderate challenge with 44m of elevation gain. As you navigate the anticlockwise loop from St. Paul's Wood Hill, you’ll traverse through the lush canopies of Irish Plantation and Holbrook Wood. Expect a mix of dirt tracks and woodland trails that can become pleasantly technical after a rain, requiring focused footwork as you climb and descend through the hilly terrain.
Steeped in medieval history, Scadbury Park is much more than just a nature reserve; it was once the estate of the Walsingham family, prominent figures in the court of Queen Elizabeth I. As you pass through the Little Wood and The Larches, you are running through land that has remained largely unchanged for centuries, formerly serving as a private hunting ground. Today, the area is a Local Nature Reserve hosting ancient oak trees and diverse wildlife. Keep an eye out for the remains of the old moated manor house, which adds a touch of historical grandeur to your mid-run scenery.
