This 26km loop is a quintessential London long-distance challenge, offering a remarkably flat and fast profile with only 11m of total ascent. Starting at Chelsea Bridge, you’ll enjoy a mix of terrain that keeps the legs engaged—roughly 70% is paved, while the remainder transitions into the soft gravel and occasional grassy verges characteristic of the Thames Path National Trail. Runners will find the south bank stretch through Battersea and Putney leads into the more "wild" and tranquil reaches of Barnes, providing a perfect environment for steady-state efforts before crossing the iconic Barnes Bridge to return via the more urban north bank embankments.
Steeped in rowing tradition, this route traverses the heart of the "Championship Course" used for the historic Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race. As you navigate the tidal bends of the River Thames, you'll pass the grand Victorian architecture of Chelsea and the legendary Putney slipways, where the river culture is palpable. The transition from the manicured lawns of Battersea Park to the rustic, bird-filled marshes near the London Wetland Centre in Barnes allows runners to experience the dual identity of London—as both a bustling global city and a surprisingly green riverside sanctuary.
