Escape the urban sprawl with this refreshing 4.5km loop through one of London’s hidden green gems. Starting at the Oxleas Wood car park, runners will enjoy a predominantly paved yet undulating course that winds through the lush canopy of Oxleas Meadow and Jack Wood. With a manageable 54m of ascent, the route offers enough elevation to build strength without being overwhelming, making it a favorite for local South East London runners looking for a crisp trail-like feel on solid footing. You’ll navigate a beautiful section of the Capital Ring, where the mix of meadow views and dense woodland provides a peaceful backdrop for a morning tempo run or a steady recovery session.
Oxleas Wood is a site of immense historical and ecological significance, containing some of the few remaining areas of ancient deciduous forest in Greenwich. Dating back over 8,000 years to the end of the last Ice Age, this site was famously saved by a massive community campaign in the 1990s against a proposed road bridge. As you run past the underground water reservoir at the top of the hill, take a moment to appreciate the panoramic views across the Thames Valley. After your 4.5km circuit, local runners highly recommend stopping at the Severndroog Castle nearby, a 18th-century Gothic folly that stands as a landmark above the treeline.
