Experience the liberating feel of open space on this 5.4km loop around Wanstead Flats, the southernmost portion of Epping Forest. This entirely flat, off-road route is a favorite for London trail runners looking to escape the pavement without leaving the city. The circuit takes you on a clockwise journey across both halves of the "Flats," navigating a mix of expansive grassy meadows and well-trodden bare earth trails. With zero elevation gain, it is the perfect location for a sustained tempo effort or a recovery run where you can truly find your rhythm amidst the natural landscape and occasional woodland clusters.
Wanstead Flats holds a unique place in London’s history, originally serving as grazing land within the royal hunting forest. Today, it stands as a vital "green lung" for East London, bridging the gap between Wanstead and Forest Gate. As you run, you’ll be treading on ground that has hosted everything from massive Victorian political rallies and wartime defenses to some of the most vibrant grassroots football leagues in the country. The area’s diverse ecology, characterized by its acidic grassland and ponds, makes it a haven for local birdlife—so keep your eyes peeled for skylarks nesting in the long grass during the spring months.
