Route Overview & Local Insights

This 9.1km route offers a perfectly flat, fully paved running experience through the quiet Essex countryside. Starting from the charming village of Radwinter, runners head out along Wimbish Green Lane, a peaceful stretch of road that leads directly to the site of the former RAF Debden. The highlight of the run is the rhythmic loop around the tarmac perimeter of the historic airfield. With only 21 meters of total ascent, this course is an ideal choice for speed work, tempo runs, or those looking for a high-quality surface without the interference of heavy traffic or technical trail sections.

Steeped in 20th-century history, the area surrounding Radwinter and the old airfield played a vital role during World War II. RAF Debden was a key Fighter Command station, famously hosting both the RAF and later the United States Eighth Air Force. As you traverse the perimeter road, you are running on the same grounds where Spitfires and Hurricanes once took flight. Today, the landscape is much more tranquil, blending this rich aviation heritage with the rolling agricultural fields and traditional timber-framed architecture characteristic of the Uttlesford district.
