This 11.1km loop offers a fantastic blend of technical trail and fast paved sections, making it a favorite for runners in Leigh-on-Sea. Starting from Castle Drive, you’ll tackle the undulating terrain of Hadleigh Park and Benfleet Downs, where the "hilly" rating truly comes into play with an elevation gain of 66 meters. The route is approximately 25% paved, providing a solid mix of firm footings and natural paths that can get quite muddy in the winter months. Runners can expect breathtaking views across the Thames Estuary and a challenging workout that tests both speed and stamina on the sharp, punchy climbs characteristic of the Essex coastline.
Rich in both natural beauty and Olympic history, Hadleigh Park served as the mountain biking venue for the London 2012 Games. Beyond its sporting prestige, the area is anchored by the atmospheric ruins of Hadleigh Castle, a 13th-century royal fortification that famously inspired the painter John Constable. As you traverse the downs, you are running through a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), home to rare wildlife and diverse flora. After finishing your loop, the local tradition is to head down into Old Leigh for a well-deserved recovery snack at one of the historic cockle sheds or a coffee overlooking the mudflats.
