This 5.3km loop offers a refreshing, pancake-flat coastal run perfect for those looking to enjoy the sea air without the challenge of hills. Starting near Blackgate Road, the route is predominantly paved (95%), leading you along the scenic Shoebury beach path. Expect a fast, accessible surface underfoot as you loop around the unique perimeter of the Shoebury Old Ranges. It is an ideal distance for a lunchtime escape or a tempo session, where the only resistance you’re likely to face is the bracing North Sea breeze coming off the Thames Estuary.
Shoeburyness, or "Shoebury" to the locals, is steeped in military history, and this route takes you right through its heart. The "Old Ranges" you’ll circumnavigate were once a vital testing site for the British Army’s artillery, dating back to the mid-19th century. As you transition from the historic ramparts to the coastal frontage, you’ll notice the shift from rugged military heritage to the traditional seaside charm of Essex. On clear days, the horizon offers sprawling views of the Kent coastline, making this short circuit feel much more expansive than its modest mileage suggests.
