Experience the raw beauty of the Essex coastline on this 14.3km loop around Wallasea Island, following a stunning section of the King Charles III England Coast Path. Starting near Canewdon, this route is delightfully flat with only 15m of ascent, but don't let the lack of hills fool you; the terrain consists entirely of grassy seawalls and unpaved trails that can become "heavy going" and muddy after rainfall. Runners will enjoy wide-open skies and panoramic views of saltmarshes, mudflats, and man-made lagoons, making it a perfect destination for those seeking solitude and a true trail running experience away from the pavement.
Wallasea Island is a place of remarkable environmental transformation, now home to one of the UK’s most ambitious coastal habitat restoration projects managed by the RSPB. Interestingly, much of the earth used to reshape this landscape and create the bird-rich lagoons came from the excavation of London's Crossrail tunnels. As you run, you are circling an ancient marshland that has been reclaimed from the sea, where tidal breaches are now carefully managed to support thousands of migratory birds. Due to its unique geography, it is essential to check the local tide times and flood risks before heading out, as these coastal paths are exposed to the full force of the elements.
