Route Overview & Local Insights

Experience the tranquil beauty of the Essex coastline on this 5.8km out-and-back route along the Wivenhoe Trail. Starting near the University of Essex riverside, this flat, mostly paved course (5.0km of high-quality surfacing) is perfect for runners looking to maintain a steady tempo or clear their head with some scenic miles. With zero elevation gain, it’s an ideal choice for a PB attempt or a recovery run. As you follow the River Colne towards the historic quay, you’ll enjoy unobstructed water views, salt marshes, and the rhythmic sound of the tide—making even a short training session feel like an escape from the bustle of Colchester.

The Wivenhoe Trail follows a path steeped in maritime history, tracing the route once used by merchants and fisherman traveling between Colchester and the sea. Colchester itself is famously known as Britain’s first recorded town, and while the city center boasts Roman walls and Norman keeps, the path to Wivenhoe offers a different perspective on the region's heritage. Arriving in Wivenhoe, you're greeted by a charming, artistic village known for its narrow streets and traditional pubs. Local runners often treat the turnaround point at the quay as a moment to soak in the atmosphere of one of the most picturesque riverside settlements in East Anglia before heading back toward the university.
