Route Overview & Local Insights

Enjoy a refreshing 8.4km loop that perfectly captures the charm of the Essex countryside. Starting at the historic bridge over the River Blackwater on Bridge Street, this route offers a gentle, mostly flat profile with only 21m of ascent, making it ideal for maintaining a steady tempo or enjoying a recovery run. Runners will experience a versatile mix of terrain, with 60% of the course on paved surfaces and the remainder following scenic riverside paths and rural lanes. The loop west alongside the river provides a tranquil atmosphere, while the return via Cuthedge Lane offers a classic English country lane experience that is both quiet and invigorating.

Coggeshall is one of England's oldest market towns, and running through its outskirts feels like a journey through history. The River Blackwater, which you'll follow for a significant portion of the run, once powered the local wool and silk mills that brought prosperity to Braintree and its surrounding villages. As you transition from the riverbanks to the south path, look out for the timber-framed architecture and the nearby 12th-century Coggeshall Abbey. This area is a favorite for local runners who appreciate the blend of well-maintained paths and the lush, green landscapes of the Blackwater Valley.
