This 5.7km out-and-back route from Braintree to Rayne offers a blissfully flat and fast surface, making it an ideal choice for runners looking to find their rhythm. Starting at Station Road, you’ll join the renowned Flitch Way, a well-maintained trail that is roughly 45% paved, providing a reliable footing even after a typical Essex drizzle. With a negligible 20m of total ascent, this course is perfectly suited for interval training, a brisk tempo run, or those making the transition from 5k to longer distances. Runners can enjoy the green canopy of the linear park, which feels remarkably secluded despite its proximity to the town center.
The Flitch Way follows the decommissioned railway line that once connected Braintree to Bishop's Stortford, a section of the Victorian-era Great Eastern Railway. Historically, this line transported "the Flitch"—large sides of bacon—associated with the famous Dunmow Flitch Trials. Today, the trail serves as a vital wildlife corridor, and as you cross the halfway point near the old Rayne Station, you'll pass the beautifully restored Victorian station building, which now houses a popular café and museum. Running here offers a unique chance to tread the path where steam engines once roared through the Essex countryside.
