This 21.8km point-to-point journey takes you through the heart of the Lake District, tackling the legendary second leg of the Bob Graham Round. Starting from Threlkeld, runners face a relentless 1595m of ascent across rugged, high-alpine terrain. You’ll conquer the mighty Helvellyn—the third-highest peak in England—along with a series of technical ridges and grassy fells. The terrain is classic Cumbrian fell running: a mix of steep, lung-bursting climbs, rocky technical sections above 500m, and a punishingly steep scree descent to Grisedale Tarn before the final, brutal climb up Fairfield. It’s a true test of mountain endurance that requires solid fell-running experience and sharp navigation skills, especially when the infamous Lakeland mist rolls in.
Steeped in fell-running folklore, this route follows in the footsteps of Bob Graham, the Keswick guest house owner who first completed the 42-summit circuit in 1932. As you traverse the ridgeline from Clough Head to Seat Sandal, you are running through a landscape shaped by glacial activity and centuries of Cumbrian hill farming. The finish line at Dunmail Raise holds its own place in local legend; it is said to be the burial mound of King Dunmail, the last King of Cumberland, who fell in battle here in 945 AD. Whether you are scouting for a future round or simply seeking an epic day in the fells, this section offers some of the most dramatic skylines and historical depth in the entire Eden district.
