This 17.2km loop offers a quintessential East Sussex running experience, characterized by its "SL" course type—significant elevation gains balanced by smooth, runnable segments. Departing from the cluster of charming villages including East Dean and Jevington, you'll tackle approximately 420m of vertical gain. The terrain is wonderfully varied; while roughly 15km features firmer footings, you will navigate a mix of chalky tracks, lush grassy paths, and sheltered woodland trails. The climb to Willingdon Hill serves as the route's peak, rewarding your efforts with panoramic views across the South Downs before a sweeping descent leads you back through the historic hamlets of Litlington and Westdean.
Steeped in local history, the Wealden district is the heart of the South Downs National Park, where the landscape tells a story of ancient sheep farming and smuggling routes. Running through Jevington, you are passing through the birthplace of the Banoffee pie, while the Long Man of Wilmington looms nearby as a prehistoric guardian of the hills. The undulating nature of this loop reflects the classic "downland" topography—dry valleys and dramatic ridges—that has inspired runners and writers like Rudyard Kipling for generations. Expect to share the trail with local skylarks and perhaps a few Southdown sheep as you traverse this protected Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
