Route Overview & Local Insights

This 5.7km out-and-back route offers a flawlessly paved, traffic-free experience through the heart of the High Weald. Starting at Sandy Cross in Heathfield, you’ll join the renowned Cuckoo Trail for an approachable yet slightly hilly run down toward Horam. With a modest ascent of 43m, the terrain provides just enough of a coastal-adjacent "Wealden roll" to challenge your heart rate without breaking your stride. Runners can expect a lush green canopy, crisp air, and a smooth surface that is perfect for everything from high-cadence tempo sessions to a steady recovery jog in the East Sussex countryside.

The path itself follows the historic trackbed of the defunct "Cuckoo Line," a railway branch that once connected Eridge to Polegate and earned its name from the local lore of the Cuckoo Fair at Heathfield. As you traverse this stretch from Heathfield to Horam, you are running through a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This corridor serves as a vital wildlife artery, so keep an eye out for local birdlife as you pass through what was once the industrial heartbeat of the Wealden iron industry, now reclaimed by nature and silence for the local running community.
