This 9.4km loop from Rye to Winchelsea offers a wonderfully accessible running experience through the heart of the Sussex countryside. Consisting of roughly 50% paved surfaces, the route is predominantly flat and fast, making it ideal for those looking to maintain a steady tempo while enjoying the sea breeze. The primary challenge arrives at the midpoint with a short, punchy climb into Winchelsea, followed by a rewarding descent that brings you back onto the level marshes. Runners will encounter a mix of quiet country lanes and scenic footpaths, providing a refreshing variety of terrain without the fatigue of heavy elevation.
Steeped in medieval history, this route connects two of the famous Cinque Ports. Rye, with its iconic cobblestone streets and timber-framed buildings, serves as the perfect trailhead for an early morning run. As you head toward Winchelsea—often described as a "bastide" town laid out in a distinct grid pattern by King Edward I—you are traversing land that was once underwater or part of a bustling 13th-century coastline. Running between these two historic "Antient Towns" allows you to soak in the atmosphere of the Romney Marsh, a landscape that has inspired generations of writers and artists with its vast skies and unique coastal light.
