Experience the rugged beauty of the South Downs with this 7.1km anticlockwise loop starting from the Saltdean United football club. This route offers a moderate challenge for trail runners, featuring a total ascent of 135m across a mix of paved sections and undulating chalk paths. As you climb toward Highdale Hill and Pickers Hill, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping panoramic views of the English Channel and the rolling green ridges that define this National Park. The terrain is characterized by its "hilly" nature, making it an excellent choice for runners looking to build strength on steady inclines before enjoying the fast, flowing descents back toward the coast at Saltdean.
Running through the Pickers Hill area near Rottingdean connects you to a landscape steeped in literary and maritime history. Rottingdean was once the home of Rudyard Kipling, and these very hills inspired much of his writing. The area is famous for its "smugglers' tunnels" and its iconic black wooden windmill on Beacon Hill, which has stood since 1823. As you navigate the trails, you are crossing ancient grazing lands that have remained largely unchanged for centuries. The local microclimate can be bracing, with the sea breeze often providing a cooling effect during the summer months, while the chalky ground provides that classic, firm South Downs underfoot feel that local runners prize year-round.
