Experience the rugged beauty of the East Sussex coastline on this challenging 10.5km loop through the Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve. Starting with a stiff climb up East Hill, runners follow the iconic Saxon Shore Way, navigating a mix of technical trails and paved sections that offer sweeping views across the English Channel. With 318m of elevation gain, this is a true lung-buster; the "Hilly" rating is well-earned as you traverse the undulating cliffs toward the Firehills. The return leg takes you through the serene Fairlight Place Copse and past the Ecclebourne Reservoir, providing a refreshing change of scenery with sheltered woodland paths and steady gradients that test your endurance right to the finish.
Hastings is steeped in maritime and medieval history, and running the Firehills offers a unique perspective on this ancient landscape. The area gets its name from the golden gorse that "fires" up the cliffs with bright yellow blooms in the spring, once used as a landmark for sailors. As you run, you’re passing through a High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty where the sandstone cliffs are constantly being reshaped by the sea. Local runners know to keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife near the reservoir and to catch their breath at the summit of East Hill, where on a clear day, the outline of the French coast can occasionally be spotted across the water.
