This 9.8km circuit offers a quintessential South Downs trail running experience, characterized by rolling chalk hills and expansive coastal views. Starting in the Eastbourne area, runners will tackle an undulating profile with 133m of ascent, featuring a significant descent through the lush valley of Ringwood Bottom towards the village of East Dean. The terrain is entirely unpaved, consisting of grassy paths and flint-strewn tracks that can be fast and firm in summer but require technical footwork during the wetter months. The final climb back up to the summit of Willingdon Hill provides a rewarding challenge for those looking to build hill strength and endurance on a classic "short-long" course.
Willingdon Hill is steeped in ancient history, forming part of the expansive South Downs National Park and located just a stone's throw from the iconic Long Man of Wilmington. As you navigate the ridge, you are running through a landscape populated by Neolithic and Bronze Age earthworks, including several well-preserved tumuli (ancient burial mounds) visible along the skyline. The area is a haven for local biodiversity; keep an eye out for rare butterflies and skylarks that nest in the chalk grassland. This route provides a perfect escape from the bustle of Eastbourne, offering a sense of isolation and grandeur that has inspired writers and walkers for centuries.
