This 5.3km loop is a refreshing escape into the heart of the Nene Valley, offering a flat and fast terrain that is perfect for runners of all abilities. Starting from Randall Close, the route takes you on an anti-clockwise journey through a mosaic of tranquil waters. You’ll glide past Three Corner Lake and circle the expansive Higham Lake, with the path eventually leading you past the peaceful Cetti’s Lake before heading back. With 5.0km of paved surfaces and virtually zero elevation gain, this is an ideal course for a tempo run or a scenic recovery jog where you can settle into a consistent rhythm amidst a lush, lakeside backdrop.
The area surrounding Higham Ferrers and the Nene Way is steeped in both natural beauty and local history. These lakes are part of the Stanwick Lakes and Nene Wetlands complex, a site of international importance for birdlife. As you run, keep an ear out for the distinctive call of the Cetti’s Warbler, the namesake of one of the lakes you’ll pass. This region was once a hub for the Northamptonshire boot and shoe industry, but today it serves as a vital green lung for East Northamptonshire, where the historic charm of the nearby market towns meets the serene, reclaimed landscapes of the Nene Valley gravel pits.
