Route Overview & Local Insights

Escape into the wild, open landscapes of Dorset on this 10.5km loop through the Morden Bog Nature Reserve and Gore Heath. Starting from the Wareham Forest car park, this trail offers a refreshingly flat experience with just 33m of total ascent, making it an ideal choice for runners looking to maintain a steady tempo or clear their heads on softer terrain. Expect a mix of wide gravel tracks through pine plantations and sandy paths that cut across the sprawling purple heathland. As a "soft" surface route with zero pavement, it is gentle on the joints, though the sandy sections through Gore Heath will definitely give your calves an extra workout. Keep an eye out for local wildlife; it is not uncommon to spot deer darting through the trees or rare birds rising from the mire.

Wareham Forest and Morden Bog represent some of the last remaining fragments of the Great Heath that once covered south Dorset. This area is steeped in natural history and is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), home to all six species of native British reptiles. Historically, this landscape has inspired writers and artists for centuries, mirroring the "Egdon Heath" described in Thomas Hardy's novels. Running here feels like stepping back into an older, more rugged version of England. After finishing your session, you are just a short drive from the historic market town of Wareham, where you can refuel at a local tea room or explore the ancient Saxon earth walls that still surround the town center.
