This 8.2km loop offers a quintessential Dorset running experience, trading flat pavement for the heart-pumping ascent of Mintern's Hill. With 177m of elevation gain, the initial climb is a stern test of your aerobic capacity, but the reward is a glorious stretch along the ridge where you can open up your stride on relatively level ground. The terrain is a mix of approximately 65% paved surfaces and rugged trails, concluding with a technical, steep descent through the Langdon Farms estate. It is a "short but stout" route that packs the intensity of a much longer run into a manageable distance, perfect for runners looking to build hill strength while enjoying sweeping views of the Marshwood Vale.
Starting and ending in the historic town of Beaminster, you are running through an area steeped in literary and agricultural history. Beaminster famously served as the inspiration for 'Emminster' in Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the d'Urbervilles, and as you traverse the Wessex Ridgeway, you are following an ancient merchant path that has been used for millennia. The surrounding hills are designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the steep "holloways" you’ll encounter are unique to this South West landscape, carved out over centuries by the passage of carts and rainwater. After navigating the steep drop back into town, local runners often congregate at the historic marketplace for a well-earned post-run coffee.
