Route Overview & Local Insights

This 5.4km out-and-back route offers a fast, flat, and remarkably scenic experience along the Teignmouth Seafront. Running entirely on paved surfaces with a negligible 13m of ascent, it is an ideal choice for interval training or a relaxed recovery run with constant views of the English Channel. Starting at the iconic Teignmouth Lighthouse, you’ll head northeast along the promenade, passing the classic Victorian pier before following the sea wall as it hugs the coastline toward Holcombe. The turnaround point occurs where the coastal path ducks under the historic Great Western Main Line, providing a rhythmic and straightforward run that catches the best of the South Devon sea breeze.

Teignmouth is a town steeped in maritime history, sitting at the mouth of the Teign Estuary. As you run this stretch, you are traversing a piece of Victorian engineering heritage; the railway line that runs alongside the path was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and is famous for being one of the most picturesque—and most frequently battered by storms—railway stretches in the UK. The lighthouse itself, built in 1845, stands as a sentinel at the "Den," a large open green space that has been the heart of the town’s leisure life for centuries. Local runners recommend timing your run for high tide to experience the full drama of the waves, though the path remains well-protected for a safe and invigorating session year-round.
