This 11.2km loop offers a quintessential Dartmoor running experience, blending rugged fell-running terrain with a fast, paved finish. Starting from South Brent, you’ll tackle a steady ascent on soft grassy trails toward the summit of Wester Whitebarrow. As the highest point on the course, it demands strong lungs and steady footwork, but the panoramic views across the southern moor are well worth the effort. The route then transitions into a more rhythmic descent toward the striking Avon Dam Reservoir, before following a smooth 20% paved section along the valley floor to the finish—perfect for opening up your stride after the hilly mid-section.
Steeped in industrial and ancient history, the area around Wester Whitebarrow is marked by the remains of the Redlake Tramway and prehistoric cairns, serving as a reminder of the moor's long human history. The Avon Dam itself was completed in 1957 to supply water to the South Hams district, and the River Avon—distinct from its famous namesakes elsewhere—carves a tranquil path through this valley. Local runners often favor this route for its varied footing and the chance to spot Dartmoor ponies grazing near the reservoir’s edge, providing a truly wild atmosphere only minutes from the edge of the National Park.
