This 6.7km out-and-back route offers a unique coastal running experience between Torcross and Strete Gate in South Devon. The path is remarkably flat, following the natural shingle ridge that separates the freshwater Slapton Ley from the vast expanse of the English Channel. Runners will enjoy a completely level out-and-back course with zero ascent, making it an ideal choice for a recovery run or a coastal speed session. The terrain is primarily established path and trail running alongside the A379, providing spectacular dual-aspect water views and a refreshing sea breeze that keeps you cool even on warmer Devon days.
Steeped in both natural beauty and wartime history, this stretch of the South West Coast Path is truly evocative. Slapton Ley is the largest natural freshwater lake in South West England and serves as a vital SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) for rare birdlife. However, local runners will also feel the weight of history here; this beach was the site of Exercise Tiger in 1944, a D-Day rehearsal that remains a poignant part of the area's heritage. As you reach the Torcross end, look out for the Sherman Tank Memorial, a sobering reminder of the past situated at the edge of this stunning, rugged coastline.
