Experience the best of the North Devon coast with this 10.7km loop starting from Fremington Quay. This route offers a refreshingly flat terrain, making it ideal for maintaining a steady tempo or enjoying an easy recovery run with zero meters of ascent. You will start on the buttery-smooth, paved surface of the Tarka Trail—a former railway line—before transitioning onto the more rugged, natural textures of the coastal path near Isley Marsh. Runners will navigate a mix of 75% paved paths and well-trodden trails, providing a scenic variety of landscapes including expansive saltmarshes and intertidal mudflats that change character with every tide.
Steeped in North Devon history, the Tarka Trail is named after Henry Williamson’s famous novel, *Tarka the Otter*, and follows the scenic journey of the protagonist through this very landscape. Starting at the historic Fremington Quay, once a bustling port for the export of Ball Clay, you are running through a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). The RSPB Isley Marsh is a sanctuary for migratory waders and waterfowl, so keep an eye out for curlews and egrets as you loop back towards the quay. After your run, the local heritage center and cafe at the quay are popular post-run gathering spots for the vibrant Devon running community.
