This 7.2km out-and-back journey along the Granite Way offers one of the most accessible yet breathtaking running experiences in West Devon. Starting near Okehampton, the route follows a fully paved, multi-use path that provides a smooth surface perfect for maintaining a steady rhythm. While classified as slightly hilly with 42m of ascent, the gradients are gentle and consistent, making it an excellent choice for runners looking to transition from flat roads to more undulating terrain. The highlight of the run is crossing the spectacular Meldon Viaduct, where you are rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding moorland and the steep valleys below.
The Granite Way occupies a historic corridor, following the former Southern Railway line that once connected Exeter to Plymouth. Running here feels like stepping back into the industrial heritage of Dartmoor; the Meldon Viaduct itself is an engineering marvel, standing 46 metres high and constructed from iron and steel to transport local stone. As you run toward Meldon, you'll be flanked by the wild, rugged edge of Dartmoor National Park to one side and the lush rolling hills of the Devon countryside to the other. Local runners often recommend this path during autumn for the vibrant foliage or early morning to catch the mist lifting off the West Okement River.
