Lace up your trail shoes for this rewarding 5.7km out-and-back adventure through the rugged beauty of West Devon. Starting from Okehampton College, you’ll dive straight into the lush greenery of Halstock Wood, following a dedicated off-road section of the famous Tarka Trail. With an ascent of 126m and a "Hilly" rating of 3, runners can expect a punchy, undulating profile that builds strength and rewards effort. The terrain is entirely unpaved, offering a natural surface of forest floor and hard-packed gravel that winds its way up to the turnaround point at Watchet Hill, where the panoramic views over the northern edge of Dartmoor provide the perfect mid-run breather.
Steeped in both literary and natural history, this route follows a portion of the Tarka Trail, a 180-mile loop inspired by Henry Williamson's classic novel, Tarka the Otter. While you run beneath the ancient canopy of Halstock Wood, you are traversing land that sits on the cusp of the granite massif of Dartmoor National Park. The area around Okehampton served as a vital gateway between the lowlands and the high moors for centuries, and today, Watchet Hill remains a favorite local spot for its sweeping vistas and proximity to the historic ruined castle of Okehampton. Keep an eye out for local wildlife; finding a buzzard soaring above or a deer darting through the trees is a common treat for runners in this corner of Devon.
