This 12.3km loop is a quintessential Exmoor challenge, offering a rigorous 607m of vertical gain through some of North Devon's most dramatic landscapes. Starting in the coastal village of Lynmouth, the route transitions from sea-level breezes to the rugged heights of Foreland Point. Runners will find the terrain predominantly paved, making it a fast surface despite the significant gradients. The "SL" classification hints at its steep and long nature, but the real highlight is the untimed segment at Watersmeet. This allows you to pause your clock, descend into the deep wooded gorge, and enjoy the sights where the East Lyn River and Hoar Oak Water converge without worrying about your average pace.
Lynmouth is often referred to as "Little Switzerland," a nickname coined by the Romantic poet Robert Southey due to its steep hills and alpine-style architecture. This route takes you through the heart of the Lyn Valley, an area famous for its devastating 1952 flood, now transformed into a serene National Trust haven. As you climb toward the Foreland, you are running along the highest coastline in England, providing sweeping views across the Bristol Channel toward South Wales. Finishing your run back in the harbour offers the perfect chance to explore the historic water-powered cliff railway or refuel with local Devonshire cream tea in one of the many traditional tea rooms.
