Starting from the charming Marine Parade in Budleigh Salterton, this 7.0km loop offers a quintessential East Devon running experience. The route features a balanced mix of paved surfaces and rugged coastal trails, challenging runners with a steady 111m ascent as you climb toward West Down Beacon. Expect a moderate difficulty level with some undulating terrain that rewards your effort with breathtaking views of the Jurassic Coast. As you navigate the section near East Devon Golf Club and loop around Knowle Corner, you’ll transition from salty sea air to the peaceful, sheltered lanes near Lily Farm before a gratifying flat finish on the Green.
This area is a crown jewel of the East Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). The red Triassic sandstone cliffs you'll see along the coast path date back over 250 million years, providing a dramatic backdrop that has inspired naturalists and runners alike for generations. Budleigh Salterton itself maintains a timeless, tranquil atmosphere, famous for its unique pebble beach and the nearby River Otter estuary. Running through this landscape feels like a journey through time, bridging the gap between the ancient geological history of the cliffs and the manicured, quintessential English countryside near the golf course and local farmsteads.
