This 18.5km circuit is a masterclass in Devon coastal running, offering a challenging mix of steep technical climbs and breathtaking Atlantic views. With 466m of ascent spread across four primary peaks, runners can expect a rigorous "rollercoaster" profile that tests both leg strength and endurance. The route transitions from winding country lanes to rugged, narrow coastal paths, particularly around the dramatic headland near Start Point. While the paved sections allow for a steady rhythm, the hilly terrain demands careful effort management, especially on the final ascent toward the car park before the final scenic descent back into Beesands.
The area is steeped in maritime history and geological wonder, most notably the lost village of Hallsands. As you run the coastal stretch, you can peer down at the ruins of the original settlement which was tragically reclaimed by the sea during a 1917 storm—a sobering reminder of the power of the Devon coastline. Passing through East Prawle provides a glimpse of Devon’s southernmost village, known for its quirky local culture and the iconic Pigs Nose Inn. Running past the Start Point Lighthouse, which has guided mariners since 1836, provides one of the most iconic backdrops in the South West, making every vertical meter of this route feel entirely earned.
