Route Overview & Local Insights

This 7.2km loop through Ticknall and Calke Park offers a quintessential English countryside running experience, blending mild challenges with scenic variety. With a gentle ascent of 54m, the route is classified as hilly, but the inclines are manageable and rewarding. Runners will navigate a diverse mix of terrain, from 20% paved surfaces to rustic, unsurfaced trails that cut through lush farmland and park estates. Given the natural terrain, segments can become quite muddy after rainfall, so trail shoes are highly recommended to maintain grip as you transition between the hard-packed paths and the softer woodland tracks.

Steeped in local history, this route takes you through the heart of Ticknall, a village once famous for its lime yards and pottery. As you run through Calke Park, you are moving through a "time capsule" estate managed by the National Trust, home to the Grade I listed Calke Abbey. Keep an eye out for the ancient deer park and the "Old Man of Calke," an oak tree believed to be over 1,200 years old. The area's unique character—a blend of crumbling masonry, stately architecture, and wild Derbyshire landscapes—provides a stunning backdrop that makes every kilometer of this mid-distance run feel like a journey through time.
