This 11.4km loop starting from the Goyt Valley near Buxton offers a quintessential Peak District fell running experience. With a 221m ascent, the route presents a varied challenge: starting with manageable tracks and a segment along a former high-altitude railway line before hitting a demanding, steep climb through the heather. Runners will find themselves on technical, peaty paths as they reach the 500m summit of Burbage Hill. The descent is equally rewarding, transitioning into wide paths bordered by bracken that lead down to the tranquil River Goyt, providing a scenic, flatter finish to wash the lactic acid from your legs after the climb.
The Goyt Valley is steeped in industrial and natural history, once serving as a bustling hub for coal mining and railway transport. As you run along the level sections, you are actually traversing the bed of the historic Cromford and High Peak Railway, one of the world's first long-distance lines. Local tip: this area is notorious for its boggy conditions after a Derbyshire downpour, so choose your footwear wisely—aggressive trail lugs are highly recommended. After conquering Burbage Hill, you’re just a short drive from the spa town of Buxton, the perfect spot for a post-run recovery coffee or a soak in the famous thermal waters.
This course has sections close to or above 500m. Weather conditions can change at short notice, so plan accordingly.
