This 4.5km circuit through Grin Low offers a quintessential High Peak running experience, blending manageable distance with a rewarding 101m of elevation gain. Starting from the iconic Poole's Cavern, the route follows the well-marked Buxton Ring of Trees Walk, guiding you through serene woodland before opening up as you head south toward the summit of Grin Low. The terrain is entirely paved, making it an excellent choice for runners seeking a consistent surface even in damp Peak District weather. Expect a "hilly" challenge that tests your climbing legs early on, followed by a flowing descent along the Dane Valley Way that allows for a fast, scenic finish back at the cavern.
Steeped in industrial and natural history, Grin Low is far more than just a local hilltop. The area is dominated by Solomon's Temple, a Victorian-era landmark also known as Grin Low Tower, which was built atop a Bronze Age barrow. As you run through these woods, you are traversing land once central to Buxton's lime-burning industry, evidenced by the unique hump-and-hollow topography of the lime slack heaps now reclaimed by nature. This route provides a perfect snapshot of the High Peak’s rugged beauty, offering panoramic views over Buxton and the rolling Derbyshire hills that have inspired visitors since the spa town's Georgian heyday.
