This 9.8km circuit in the High Peak offers a quintessential fell running experience, balancing a significant 296m ascent with manageable terrain. Starting with a long, steady climb from the Errwood Reservoir, runners will tackle the ascent toward Shining Tor, the highest point in Cheshire. The middle section provides a unique underfoot experience, utilizing paved gritstone slabs that allow for a fast, rhythmic pace across the ridge to Pym's Chair. Classified as an "SL" (Small/Long) course with a hilly rating of 4, the route concludes with a scenic descent along Foxlow Edge, offering expansive views of the Goyt Valley and technical trail sections that will delight those looking for a mix of road-side paths and rugged moorland tracks.
The Goyt Valley is steeped in industrial and natural history, having once been a bustling community before the reservoirs were constructed in the mid-20th century. As you run past the ruins of Errwood Hall, you’re traversing what was once a grand Victorian estate, known for its extensive rhododendron gardens which still bloom vividly today. The tors themselves—Shining Tor and Pym’s Chair—are steeped in local folklore; Pym's Chair is named after a preacher who allegedly used the rock formation as a natural pulpit. Running here provides more than just a workout; it is a journey through a landscape that has transitioned from a site of coal mining and gritstone quarrying to one of the most serene and preserved corners of the Peak District National Park.
