This 8.4km loop through the Peak District’s dramatic gritstone landscapes offers a quintessential moorland running experience. Starting from Cutthroat Bridge, runners face a rewarding challenge with 187m of ascent, characterized by a gradual climb that shifts into a technical, steep haul up toward the iconic Salt Cellar rock formation. The terrain is entirely off-road, featuring rugged paths that contour along the valley side before reaching heights over 500m at White Tor. Expect a fast, exhilarating downhill return to the finish, but keep your eyes on the trail; the combination of rocky underfoot sections and the stunning panoramic views makes for a run that is as mentally engaging as it is physically demanding.
Steeped in local folklore, the area around Cutthroat Bridge and Derwent Edge is as historic as it is beautiful. The "Salt Cellar" and other gritstone tors you’ll pass were sculpted over millennia by wind and ice, serving as ancient landmarks for travelers crossing the High Peak. This high-altitude plateau is notorious for its rapidly shifting microclimate, often shrouded in mist one moment and bathed in golden light the next. Running here provides a true sense of wilderness, where the call of the red grouse and the vast expanse of the Dark Peak heather moorlands remind you why this was Britain's first National Park. Always come prepared with a windshell, as the exposure above the tree line can turn a mild day into a true mountain adventure.
