Conquering Whinstone Lee Tor offers Peak District runners a quintessential 13.2km hill session that blends technical grit with high-altitude rewards. Starting with a sharp, punchy ascent to the Tor, you’ll trade the firm lanes of High Peak for rugged, stony trails and a satisfyingly springy, peaty descent through expansive heather-clad moorland. With over 200m of elevation gain and sections peaking above 500m, this loop demands respect for the terrain; however, the transition into a flat, rhythmic stretch alongside the reservoir allows you to flush the legs and find your tempo. It is a fantastic intermediate challenge for those looking to master mixed-terrain transitions and steady climbing.
Steeped in gritstone heritage, Whinstone Lee Tor serves as a natural gateway to the high moors and is famously part of the Derwent Edge landscape. This area provides some of the most iconic vistas in the National Park, overlooking the Ladybower Reservoir—a site steeped in history as the former training ground for the "Dambusters" 617 Squadron. As you traverse the moorland, you aren't just running through a landscape; you are crossing an ancient boundary where the wild dark peak meets the rolling green dales. Keep an eye out for the local red grouse in the heather, and always pack a shell, as the weather on the High Peak moors is notoriously mercurial compared to the valley floor.
