The Skamper Edale Ridgeline is a heavy-duty 31.7km loop that offers an uncompromising tour of the Peak District’s most iconic summits. Starting from Hope, this route delivers over 800m of climbing, beginning with the steep ascent of Lose Hill before traversing the Great Ridge to Mam Tor. Runners will experience a gritty mix of technical gritstone trails, exposed moorland, and roughly 15km of paved sections that connect these legendary peaks. It is a true endurance test that demands respect, particularly as you navigate the high-altitude stretches between Brown Knoll and the rugged Crowden Tower, where the weather can shift from calm to continental in minutes.
Steeped in local history, this route skirts the edge of the Kinder Scout plateau, the spiritual home of the "Right to Roam" movement following the 1932 Mass Trespass. As you crest Win Hill and look back toward the Vale of Edale, you are running through a landscape that has inspired generations of fell runners and explorers. The village of Hope serves as an ideal basecamp, offering easy rail access and local pubs where runners traditionally gather to refuel. Keep an eye out for the ancient "Hope Cross" marker, a gritstone guidepost dating back to the 18th century that once directed packhorse teams through these challenging high-altitude passes.
