Engineered for the endurance athlete, the "Nine Edges" is a formidable 41.1km point-to-point challenge that traverses the iconic gritstone escarpments of the Peak District National Park. With nearly 700m of ascent and a technical, unpaved terrain rating of 3 for hilliness, this route demands physical resilience and keen navigation. Starting at the Ladybower Inn, runners will conquer a continuous chain of spectacular ridges including Derwent, Stanage, and Froggatt Edges. Expect sweeping moorland trails, rugged rock formations, and wide-open views that make the steep climbs through the Dark and White Peak border worth every ounce of effort. The inclusion of a strategic "untimed" window at Longshaw Estate allows for a necessary refuel before tackling the final stretches toward the Robin Hood Inn.
Steeped in climbing and gritstone history, this route follows the ancient geological backbone of Northern England. These edges have served as natural landmarks for centuries and are legendary within the British fell running community. As you traverse Stanage Edge, you are running through a landscape that famously inspired literary greats like Charlotte Brontë and served as a backdrop for numerous historical dramas. The transition from the high, wild moors of the north to the more wooded, sheltered edges near Baslow offers a masterclass in the Peak District's diverse ecology. Finishing near the village of Baslow, the route connects hikers' favorites with serious trail running segments, providing a comprehensive tour of the National Park's most dramatic industrial and natural heritage.
